Did you know that you actually do need sunscreen even if it is going to be cloudy and rainy? Seriously, I would have thought all that cloud would block out some UV rays, no? That was until I read about this: “Do I need sunscreen on a day with extreme UV levels if it’s cloudy?”

Well, just in case you decide that you need some totally awesome organic sunscreen, I’ve got one for you. Have I tried it? Of course! The kids get some too. We used it for our staycation earlier this week and the kids gets pretty water-logged when we go on a staycation. We used the Little Innoscents Sun Lotion. What I liked about this one is it doesn’t smell like any other sunscreen, it is fragrance free. It doesn’t leave that white film over the skin. And it rubs in really well. This sun lotion contains calendula, aloe vera and Vitamin E, so your skin remains hydrated whilst being protected.

But wait, there’s more. We also tried the Buds Organics Solar Care Lotion. It had a light floral scent, and rubbed in really well too! This would be for mothers who prefer titanium dioxide over zinc oxide because the Buds Solar Care Lotion uses titanium dioxide as it’s active ingredient! I am one happy mummy.

As retailers, we are fortunate to be able to try out different types of diaper creams on our kids to find out what and how each of the products work on them. We have classified our diaper creams into two categories:

Preventive & Treatment

Preventive would be your every day diaper cream which will provide the baby’s bum with a barrier to protect from getting a diaper rash. Some of these diaper creams will contain zinc oxide, which serves as an excellent waterproof barrier to prevent the baby’s bum from stewing in a damp patch. There are of course the organic versions which uses oils, such as sunflower oil, as a barrier to protect. One such diaper cream is the Buds Organics Nappy Time Change Cream.

Treatment would be a cream that serves to treat the diaper rash and still provide that barrier to protect baby’s delicate bum from other free radicals. One such cream will be the Buds Organics Nappy Time Soothing Cream (previously known as Nappy Rash Rescue Cream).

Shiso is a herb that is part of the mint family and we commonly see it in Asian cooking, predominantly in Japanese cuisine as a kind of decoration. But it’s properties definitely goes beyond just being a decoration on the plate!

The shiso plant contains a large proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, mainly alpha-linoleic acid, which is a kind of omega fat that our body cannot produce. In a study, it was found that shiso extract actually inhibited acute inflamation for dermatitis.

Gluco-oligosaccharide (G-OS) is a water soluble oligosaccharide similar to those found in breast milk that help protect newborns from infection. These oligosaccharides help protect from infection without having bactericidal effects (prevents bacteria from causing an infection) and therefore do not induce bacterial resisitance (does not kill good bacteria so you build up a resistance to the good bacteria!). They work by stopping the bacteria from adhering to the cell wall, one of the first steps in mounting an infection and appear to act on Staphylococcus aureus – a bacteria found in the majority of patients who suffer from atopic dermatitis and is thought to be related to skin inflammation.

Avocado oil is the edible oil pressed from the pulp of the avocado. It can be used as a beneficial skin care product, for special scalp treatments, medicinal purposes, and in healthy cooking.

Nutritional Benefits:
Protein and Fats.
Avocado oil contains a high amount of proteins and unsaturated fats, both of which are strong skin agents. Avocado oil actually contains omega-3 fatty acids – those very same fatty acids as found in fish oil. Thus, not only can this oil be used as a beneficial lotion, but also as healthy cooking oil!

Sterolin.
Avocado oil is high in a substance called sterolin, which studies have shown to facilitate the softening of the skin and to reduce the incidence of age spots;

Antioxidants.
Avocado oil is rich in antioxidants, making it useful for healing sun-damaged skin. Antioxidants like vitamins A, D and E in avocado cause the skin to be suppler, and are thus particularly good for dry or aged skin.

Lecithin and Potassium.
Avocado oil contains lecithin and potassium, which are all highly beneficial for the skin as well as the hair;

Health Benefits:
Moisturize the Skin.
Avocado oil applied topically helps relieve dry and itchy skin. Once applied, avocado oil is deeply absorbed by the skin, thus making it an ideal moisturizer and skin care agent.

Boost Scalp Health.
In addition to helping clear scaly skin, it can also relieve itchy scalp symptoms. Avocado oil, when regularly applied to the scalp, can stimulate hair growth.

Increase Collagen Production.
When applied, avocado oil increases the production of collagen, which helps keep the skin plump and decreases the effects of aging.

Treat Skin Conditions.
Avocado oil is useful in the treatment of a variety of skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis.

Others.
Avocado oil facilitates the healing of wounds and burns to the skin. It also helps to relieve and heal diaper rash.

The school holidays are here, so is the rainy season. Rain can sometimes disrupt any outdoor plans you have for your kids. Fortunately, in Singapore, you can opt for an indoor playground to keep the kids entertained and let them run around in a safe and hopefully supervised environment. A lot of indoor playgrounds have sprouted in recent years (e.g., Cool De Sac, The Polliwogs, Hokey Pokey, Amazonia) and all, if not most, have slides and ball pits. Some even have climbing walls.

Somehow, the ball pits are always a draw for the kiddos.  You are sure to find a ball pit in any of the indoor playground, some may be shallower than others. Children would just love to jump right into the ball pit and dive into the thousands and millions of balls and pretend to swim in the ball pit. Ahh… fond memories of the Parkway Parade Burger King ball pit. The lure of a padded pit filled with colourful plastic balls. Ball pits are also for rent nowadays for parties and you can buy smaller sized ball pits for your home from toy stores like Toys “R” Us.

However, one nagging concern I have as a parent, is the cleanliness of the ball pits and the indoor playground. I must confess that I never had these thoughts before when I was playing in them or before I became a parent. Furthermore, with flu season here and you read the news about the spread of Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD), it’s really hard not to think about protecting your own child from the germs while they are having fun in the ball pits.
